Building a church in a Malawi maize field

Building their Church with a Maize Field, Together!

By Kathy L McFarland and Jimmy Chirambo

Altar of Fire Global Ministry – Malawi is the real deal folks, and Senior Pastor Jimmy Chirambo is doing the work of the Lord in extreme poverty conditions. His congregation has absolutely no way of building their church except for their sweat labor and dedicated hope that together they can succeed with God’s help.

Already, they have built their church with their own hands, making bricks themselves and stacking them to the ringbeam level! Impressive! Extraordinary! Absolutely NO, NO, NO rich denominational support is helping them to establish a presence of unwanted foreign colonialism and control the way they worship God. These Malawain people, gather together with common cause to serve their Lord, accomplish His Works, and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout their lands, trusting that their God will provide all that is necessary to complete His works. Check out the email that Jimmy sent me last month!

to me

We started gathering as a church on 23rd April, 2023 with zero dollar. We had completely nothing. BUT, we had all the faith that the Lord will do it himself. We started gathering in a classroom for a year. We were gathering at Kakule Primary School which is in one of Lilongwe city locations. Many people from different churches mocked us. We kept moving forward with the Lord’s guidance until we bought our own land with the money we worked for in rich people’s maize (corn) fields in the same first year of the ministry. We bought the land from one of the community chiefs within our ministry location at a cost of MK5,200,000 (USD 3,001). In the second year, 2024, we started clearing and laying a foundation for the church structure. In 2025 we started building the church structure until now. We are struggling to finish it due to lack of resources for we are all economically down, we are just trusting the Lord will do it. The church structure is now on a ringbeam level.

The land is in the name of the ministry, Altar of Fire Global Ministries – Malawi. The ministry has full ownership of the land.

In this church structure building period, no ministry member is forced to do any work like making bricks and any other work. They voluntarily come at the project site and work. And people give from the little they have at their own will, no one forces them. Sometimes other people hire us to work in their maize (corn) farms, the little we are paid is the little we buy bags of cement and bricks for the structure building. We also use the little Sunday service collections to buy resources for the church structure. Currently, we don’t have any external support, we are struggling with it own our own.

We thank God for ministry members are voluntariy doing a very great work. They help in the following;

  1. They draw water used for building the church structure.
  2. They carry bricks on their heads from where we buy to the project site.
  3. They give the little from their little torwards the church structure building.
  4. We go together to work in the maize (corn) fields of people when hired.
  5. They help in supervising the progress work but under me. We have formed a committee of ten people within the ministry to supervise the work on ground.

We are also renting a small piece of land where we grow maize (corn) for the survival of our Senior Pastor and his whole family. In average we harvest ten (10) bags of maize (corn) every year. Each bag weighs 50 kilograms which if sold gives us MK350,000 (USD 202).

We don’t go and borrow someone’s money for building the structure or for feeding our pastors. We fear debts so much for we have no capacity of paying back. The Senior Pastor is not working with any company or organization. And he doesn’t even have a business except a very small carpentry shop. As such we cannot go out and borrow someone’s money for building the church structure. We don’t want to bring shame into the body of Christ. We believe one day the Lord will bring His faithful people to support His work and His servants.

The little God gives us is the little we are using to build His house.

Thanks mommy for all the great work you are doing for us. Your love for the people of MALAWI is immeasurable. God be with you.

I got shocked yesterday when I was reading one of famous international news online. I found that Malawi is still on number 2 of the poorest country in the world. It is second to Afghanistan. GOD HELP US!

Yours son forever!

Jimmy.
